East charter begins work on campus
By SHERRY KITTS, Staff Writer
Jan. 16, 2002 - Land is being cleared, and construction is set to begin at what will become the new East Lincoln campus of the Lincoln Charter School.
“I am fairly optimistic that the school will be completed by mid to late August,” principal Dr. Bill Elmore said.
All permits have been awarded for the construction. Elmore said.
The actual school building will school will sit on two acres of a 17-acre site that is located on N.C. 16, just north of the Westport subdivision, in Denver.
“The location is great, and is central to everything,” Elmore said. “It will be easy to access, and we will be next door to a neighborhood.”
Building committee chairwoman, Debbie Byers said up to 17 acres around the site can be used.
The property will not be owned by the charter school, but will be leased from Denver resident Glen Reynolds, who is constructing the building.
The east campus of the school began with approximately 100 students three years ago, according to Lincoln Charter school board chairman Dave Machado.
The school currently has 172 students enrolled at its present campus, located at 1242 N.C. 16, N., in the Triangle area.
According to Byers, one of the reasons to construct a new school is space.
“We couldn’t house another grade right now,” Byers said.
The new school will have 13 classrooms — enough to house grades K-12 — a library, a computer lab, and a media center.
However, there will not be a gym or cafeteria in the new school, but phase two of the project will include building a multi-purpose facility, on the site.
Funding for the building was provide through state and county moneys.
The new pre-fabricated metal school building will be approximately 13,500-square feet and faced with brick veneer.
As long as the weather permits, Byers said, construction will begin this week.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at a later date.
