Miss N.C. makes Lincolnton visits
By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer
August 26, 2002 - Miss North Carolina Misty Clymer has been spotted all over town — at Simply Elegant, at a Lincolnton High School football game, maybe
even City Lunch.
“She’s looking forward to her first City Lunch hot dog,” Ginger Thompson says laughingly. “We’re introducing her to Lincoln County delicacies.”
Thompson makes sure Clymer has a place to stay and takes in the sites while visiting Lincolnton. But some things Clymer says she’s got to figure out on her own.
“I’m getting used to these one way roads,” she says.
Clymer has been visiting Lincolnton for the past three weekends, getting fitted at Simply Elegant. The local shop is designing all of her outfits for the
coming Miss America Pageant. But Clymer has another tie to the town.
She and Thompson — a fourth-grade teacher at Battleground Elementary School — met when Clymer was crowned Miss Western Piedmont. Thompson serves as the
business manager for the organization and works directly with each woman who earns the crown.
Though Clymer is now represented by the Miss North Carolina organization, Thompson says their relationship couldn’t be stronger.
“She’s like my daughter.”
Clymer was crowned Miss North Carolina July 24. She took over the title after Rebekah Revels stepped down. Clymer says the experience has been a “smooth
transition.”
“It’s been wonderful. Everyone has been so supportive.”
The reigning queen headed back to Raleigh Saturday. She completed a formal wardrobe showing of her pageant-wear Sunday, and will return to Lincolnton for a
final fitting before heading off to the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J.
The pageant will be Sept. 21 and will air on TV on ABC at 8 p.m.
Thompson says she’ll be watching with fingers crossed.
“Hopefully they’ll crown the girl with Lincolnton ties.”
