Lincolnton’s Wilson attends Nike camp
By TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Sports Writer
July 1, 2002 - Lincolnton High School rising junior and basketball player Eric Wilson was selected and recently attended the prestigious Nike basketball camp.
The camp in St. Louis, Mo., was for some of the top prep basketball players in the country. This camp was for rising freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
Wilson said he and three others from Charlotte were the only players from the top 120 who were from the state of North Carolina.
“It’s an honor,” Wilson said. “I was just surprised. It was fun and real competitive. Playing against the best players in the country was fun. Everybody could play. They were really
experienced. I’m glad I got to go. There were some big names there. I was glad I was part of it.”
Wilson went to the camp the week of June 18-23. He said there was a classroom session each day where the players learned about getting cleared to play college basketball. Topics such as
SAT scores and how to qualify to play in the NCAAs were discussed.
After that, it was basketball and more basketball.
“We basically played against each other 5-on-5 and 3-on-3,” Wilson said. “It was a blast. It was fun.”
Wilson said he did well against the competition.
“I thought I held my own pretty good, coming from small Lincolnton,” he said. “I think I played well.
“When you size yourself up against the best, you can see where your game is from there and where you need to go. I saw where I had to go and get better,” he said. “After I left, (I
realized) for my size (six-foot tall) I have to learn to dribble better and work in the weight room.”
Summer basketball is not over for the Lincolnton High standout. Wilson and his AAU team are competing in the national tournament in Detroit in the 16-and-under class.
Wilson was the leading scorer as a sophomore for LHS last season. He started his freshman year.
As for college basketball, Wilson wants to stay close to home. The schools he likes are Charlotte, Winthrop and Appalachian St.
But it’s early. Football practice is about a month away.
